Tyler and I are in the process of training for our first Ironman (Ironman Canada on July 29, 2018). We also decided to repeat a race that we did last year (The North Face Endurance Challenge 50K) near Washington, DC, on April 28, 2018.
To prepare for these events, we merged last year’s 50K training plan with an 8 month Ironman training plan that I found online. We’ve been modifying the plan as we go along to accommodate our energy level, holidays, and other life commitments.
So far we’ve found the plan to be aggressive, but motivating and effective. We hope you enjoy it too, whether you follow it to a “T”, modify it to fit your own goals, or pull out a few ideas here and there.
Here’s what the first 5 weeks looked like. Generally, this portion of the plan was pretty flexible and left some free time for rest and other fun activities.
8 Month Ironman/Ultramarathon Training Plan
Training period: Weeks 1-5
Time until Ironman: 8 months
Time until 50K: 5 months
Note: Life happens! If we’re traveling or balancing other commitments, we try to be flexible and make the most of the time and resources we have. I’ve highlighted variables like this in the training schedule below.
